Why a redesign?

The redesign was implemented because the backend of the site was to be updated, and stakeholders knew users were confused on how to navigate it. As a result, many features and resources were unknown to users.

    Scope & Constraints

For this project, we were expected to conduct two sprints, and the final deliverable would be a prototyped design. Our constraints included the fact that it was our first sprint, and we had limited guidance.

    Problem

Currently on the website, there are 3 separate event pages, but users only knew about VIP Events, events hosted by BRIDGEGOOD.
Users did not know the difference between the 3 types of events
Layout & design was inconsistent amongst the 3 event pages
Users were unsure about how to register for a BRIDGEGOOD event

How might we organize, define and differentiate the event page for a smoother process?

    The Solution

    Events Homepage

We created a homepage to give an overview of all events offered so users can easily understand the differences while browsing all on one page.

    Define

To help explain the differences, we added a small description under each event section.

    Differentiate

Since the Design Events are scheduled through Eventbrite, the card design defaults to Eventbrite’s card style. Because of this, BG cards were previously designed in the same style.

The same cards created confusion amongst users, so our team redesigned the cards to match the BG assets already on the site to help differentiate.

    Process

    Research

    • We conducted research with a focus on new users and current users.
    • We wanted to understand current flows and first impressions.

    Qualitative Research

In our qualitative interviews, we learned that users only knew about BRIDGEGOOD Events which is really "VIP Events" and some were confused about how to register for an event.
    Current Users
    • Have they attended events on BG?
      • How often?
    • Experience with most recent event on BG
    New Users
    • Have they attended any events related to career path?
      • If so, how often?
    • Experience with most recent event
    Both
    • Other platforms used to find and attend events
    • What they hope to accomplish in attending these events

    Shadowing Sessions

We wanted to understand how users currently navigated the event pages.
    • Any workarounds?
    • First impressions?

    Methods + Findings

Users were given a random combination of 2 tasks below to complete. They were then asked to narrate their choices and thought process.

From these sessions, we found that some pages were unclear and that users were unsure about how to register for VIP events.

    User Journey

The focus in the user journey was to look at how to shorten the steps to each the desired event page.
    Current flow
    • Currently, you access all event pages through the navigation bar
    • Although this has less steps, the user has no context on what these pages are
      • Also, the name of the event pages are different in the navigation bar
      • Ex: "BG Live" is called "Live Sessions"
      New flow
      • Directs users to a general home page
        • An opportunity to introduce users to each event page
      • Easier for user to see all types of events offered

      Persona

Based on our interviews, we created personas that highlight the user's pain points, goals, and motivations.

      Wireframe

After voting on design directions, we created wireframes to lay out how the events homepage will look.

      Final Design

      Final Design

Our final design had an events home page to make it easier for users to access and learn about all the events offered, as well as an update in design to create a cohesive look amongst the events pages.

      Key Takeaways

This project was part of a 2 week sprint and it was my first time participating in a sprint. Part of the difficulty was figuring out where to start. Our team started with user research to gain an understanding of what users were currently thinking to use as a foundation for the rest of the sprint.
